But if you do not appreciate your present, how does your past or future bring meaning to your present?
anonymous:I suppose that you made sense to some extent.
If we do not appreciate our present, our past will only bring back painful memories, anger and guilt instead of the goodness that we can learn from it.
If we do not appreciate our present, our future will only be made of dreams and fantasies instead of goals or visions to be achieved.
Appreciate your thoughts :)

Our only reality is the one we experience now: the present, this very instant. It is the only one that matters because it's what we experience now. It is not 1 second ago when you read my previous sentence, that was in the past. It is this very instant when you read this word.
Our past (or our memory of the past) is not like a river or a straight line. Rather it's like the sea. The past we have experienced is like a drop in the ocean of our mind, diluted by time & any information we experience between now and that past. Our memory of the past is not the past we experienced, because our present can influence our recall of the past, it is something similar to what actually happened (at best). The past is nothing but a trick of the mind...an illusion of time. The past is not important & irrelevant compared to our present.
The future has not existed. It exists only as a dream...a hope or idea formed in the present mind. It is not a waterfall. Rather, it is the mouth of a river, the water (our present) has no destination, it only enters more space to travel in. We cannot control our future (because of external factors like the freewill of others), nor is our future a destiny (because we have freewill).
Our past is one of an infinite number of possible pasts, our future will be one of a number of possible futures. What has determined or deternines both is the present. This very instant.
